"Over the hills and far away, Teletubbies come to play."
―The intro

Teletubbies is a British pre-school children's television series created by Ragdoll Productions' Anne Wood and Andrew Davenport. Because PBS co-owned Sprout when the channel was launched, it aired a variety of shows from its archive library on Sprout, including reruns of Teletubbies.

Plot[]

"Teletubbies is a celebration of children's play. This series introduces young children - ages one to three - to the wonders and magic of high-tech in a safe and friendly way. The series is also a wonderful opportunity for parents to share the joy of first discovery through children's eyes." (link)

For Parents[]

"Shapes are everywhere. What shape is the computer screen? The clock? Can your child find a triangle in the room?"

History[]

The show premiered on September 26, 2005, along with several other shows, to celebrate the launch of the Sprout network. Prior to that, they released it on Comcast On-Demand

It aired at 10:30 EST and PT/9:30 CT and 2PM EST and PT/1PM CT when Sprout launched.

It had a Sprout Diner snack, Teletubbies Tubby Sunshine Toast, and It had a Birthday Show recipe, Teletubbies Cupcakes.

  • A revival of the series aired on Nick Jr. in 2015. A third series, narrated by Tituss Burgess, premieres on Netflix on November 14th, 2022.
  • The Teletubbies were featured in the Rain ident, but were replaced by Chica from The Sunny Side Up Show in 2009 (the same year Sprout rebranded).
  • When Sprout Diner was discontinued and Sprout scrapped Teletubbies, the Sunshine Toast recipe was themed after The Sunny Side Up Show.
  • Footage from the show's Sprout Diner episode was reused from the "Ride a Cockhorse" segment from the UK episode "Yellow Cow" and the US episode "Emily and Jester."
  • Footage from the UK episode "Naughty Sock Returns" was used in the Teletubbies Cupcakes episode of The Birthday Show.
  • Sprout had their own versions of Teletubbies episodes that aired exclusively on there.
  • The clip of Lucy's Teletubbies introduction on The Good Night Show was of the clip in the theme song where they pop up in front of the screen and say "Eh-Oh."[2]
  • When the show would air after The Sunny Side Up Show, the camera would cut to the show right away rather than fading to black as a transition.

Connections[]

  • Jack Jameson directed the 2015 revival.
